Hiossen ET III SA

ET III SA is Hiossen's principal implant and the one most likely to be proposed to you. It is a tapered, self-tapping implant on a self-sealing Morse taper connection, and Hiossen publishes unusually specific numbers about its surface.

Note the constraint: a ∅ 3.5 mm mini fixture takes a 2.1 mm connection and yellow-coded abutments only. Regular fixtures take 2.5 mm and green. This is the detail that decides whether a replacement crown fits in fifteen years.

The surface claims, and their baseline

What Hiossen states

Compared with traditional RBM surface treatment, Hiossen reports its SA surface shows a 45 % improvement in available surface area, a substantial quickening of the gene expression, cell differentiation and proliferation central to osseointegration, 20 % faster bone healing, and loading as early as six weeks after placement.

Read the comparison carefully

Every figure is measured against RBM, resorbable blast media, an older technology. Hiossen deserves credit for naming its baseline, which many manufacturers do not. But sandblasted-and-acid-etched surfaces are the industry standard today; Straumann's SLA is the same category of treatment. “45 % more surface area than RBM” establishes that SA is a modern surface. It is not evidence that SA outperforms other modern surfaces.

The connection design

Hiossen states the 11° Morse taper is self-sealing, that the hermetic seal minimises micro-movement and reduces percolation of saliva and bacteria, and that a slightly smaller abutment diameter keeps the interface away from the bone. That last point is platform switching, deliberately setting the implant-abutment seam inboard of the bone, so the microscopic gap where bacteria gather sits away from the bone crest. It is one of the genuine design advances of the last two decades and is now near-universal.

Record your platform

Hiossen colour-codes its connections and runs several platform sizes. Components are platform-specific, a mini-platform abutment will not seat on a regular-platform implant. Get the system, connection size and reference number written down at placement.

  2. Is my connection 2.1 mm or 2.5 mm, and are my abutments yellow or green?
  3. Are you loading at six weeks, and what makes my case suitable?
  4. What diameter and length suit my bone at this site?
  5. How many ET III cases have you placed?
  6. Will you record the fixture type, connection size and reference number in writing?
