Most implants are designed assuming reasonably solid bone. MegaGen's best-known system was designed around the opposite assumption, that the bone will be soft, thin, or already compromised, and its thread shape is unusually aggressive as a result.

Who MegaGen is
MegaGen was founded in 2002 in Daegu, South Korea, by a practising oral surgeon. South Korea has one of the largest implant manufacturing industries in the world, driven by very high domestic demand, and MegaGen is among its significant exporters.
The problem MegaGen designed around
When a dentist places an implant, it must be tight in the bone immediately, before any biological healing has happened. This is primary stability, and without it the implant can micro-move during healing and fail to integrate. In dense bone at the front of the lower jaw, primary stability is easy. In the soft, spongy bone at the back of the upper jaw, it is the central difficulty of the procedure.
MegaGen's answer in AnyRidge is thread geometry. Instead of shallow, rounded threads, AnyRidge uses deep threads with a thin knife-like edge, intended to cut into and compress soft bone so that the implant locks in place. MegaGen's own catalogue describes the system as offering excellent initial stability even in compromised bone, and the company states the design is intended to work across the full range of bone densities, from the hardest (classified D1) to the softest (D4).
Think of the difference between a coarse wood screw and a fine machine screw. In dense hardwood the fine thread grips well. In soft chipboard it strips, and the coarse, deep thread holds far better. Bone varies in exactly this way from person to person and site to site, and an implant designed for soft bone is solving a real clinical problem, not marketing a cosmetic difference.

Practical considerations for patients in Canada
Cost. Generally mid to value tier, below the European premium brands.
Where it may genuinely fit. If your dentist has told you your bone in the intended site is soft, or you have been told you need a sinus lift or graft, a system engineered specifically for primary stability in poor bone is a rational choice rather than a cost compromise. Ask your dentist to explain the reasoning in those terms.
Canadian presence. MegaGen maintains Canadian offices in Burnaby, British Columbia and Markham, Ontario. That is a direct corporate presence rather than distributor-only coverage, which helps with component supply, though its Canadian footprint remains smaller than the market leaders'. What is a knife thread?
A thread profile with a thin, deep, blade-like edge rather than a shallow rounded one. The intention is to cut into and compress soft bone so the implant grips firmly at placement, which is the main difficulty when bone quality is poor.
Are Korean implants lower quality?
South Korea has one of the world's largest and most competitive implant manufacturing sectors, and its major manufacturers export globally under the same regulatory approvals as European ones. The relevant questions for a patient are the size of the independent evidence base and long-term component availability in Canada, not the country of manufacture.
