AnyRidge is the system MegaGen is known for, and its thread shape is genuinely unusual. It was designed around the assumption that the bone will be soft, which is the hardest situation in implant surgery.

The problem AnyRidge is built for

An implant must be tight in the bone at the moment it is placed, before any healing has occurred. That is primary stability, and without it the implant can move microscopically during healing and fail to integrate.

In the dense bone at the front of the lower jaw this is easy. In the soft, spongy bone at the back of the upper jaw it is the central difficulty of the operation. MegaGen's catalogue describes AnyRidge as offering excellent initial stability even in compromised bone, and states the design is intended to work across the full range of bone densities from D1 to D4.

What a knife thread does

The wood-screw analogy

Think of the difference between a coarse wood screw and a fine machine screw. In dense hardwood, the fine thread grips well. In soft chipboard it strips, and the coarse deep thread holds far better.

Bone varies in exactly this way between people and between sites. AnyRidge uses deep threads with a thin, blade-like edge intended to cut into and compress soft bone so the implant locks in place. An implant designed for soft bone is solving a real clinical problem, not marketing a cosmetic difference.

The D1–D4 scale

Dentists classify jaw bone by density on a scale from D1 to D4. D1 is dense cortical bone, typical of the front of the lower jaw. D4 is soft and sparse, typical of the back of the upper jaw. Most implant failures relating to bone quality happen at the D4 end.

If your dentist has told you your bone at the intended site is soft, or that they are concerned about stability, a system engineered specifically for that is a rational choice rather than a cost compromise. Ask them to explain the reasoning in those terms.
