Who Nobel Biocare is

In 1952 a Swedish orthopaedic researcher named Per-Ingvar Brånemark placed a titanium chamber into a rabbit's leg bone to study blood flow. When he tried to remove it, he could not: the bone had fused to the metal. He had not set out to invent anything, and it took more than a decade of work before the observation became a treatment. In 1965 he placed titanium implants in a human patient, Gösta Larsson, who kept them for the rest of his life.

That phenomenon is osseointegration, and it is the reason dental implants work at all. Every implant on this website, from every manufacturer, relies on it. Nobel Biocare is the company that commercialised Brånemark's research, and its Brånemark System line still carries his name. The company is headquartered in Switzerland and is now part of Envista Holdings.

Why this matters to you

Nobel's heritage means something specific and limited: the original design has been followed in patients for longer than any competitor's, so we know how it behaves over thirty and forty years rather than ten. That is genuinely valuable information. It does not mean today's Nobel implants are better than today's competitors, modern implants from many manufacturers have converged on similar designs, and the long-term data belongs to the old design, not the new ones.

The four connections, the thing actually worth understanding

Nobel Biocare's product catalogue is not organised by product name. It is organised by connection type: the shape of the joint where the implant meets the abutment that carries your crown. There are four, and they do not interchange.

Nobel Biocare's 2024/2025 catalogue is organised by these four connection geometries, not by product name. Parts are not interchangeable between them: an abutment made for a tri-channel implant will not fit a conical one. Whichever your dentist places determines which components can ever be fitted to it.

This is the single most practically important fact about Nobel Biocare for a patient, and it applies to every manufacturer, Nobel is simply unusually explicit about it. The connection in your jaw determines which abutments, crowns, healing caps and dentures can ever be attached to it. If you need the crown replaced in fifteen years, your dentist needs a component matching that exact geometry.

Ask for this in writing

Before you leave the practice, ask for your implant's manufacturer, system name, connection type, platform size and reference number, written down. If you move city, change dentist, or need emergency work while travelling, this record turns a difficult identification problem into a five-minute one. Dentists identify unknown implants from X-rays routinely, but it costs time and sometimes guesswork. This is the cheapest insurance in implant dentistry and almost nobody asks for it.

Decoding the surface names

TiUnite is Nobel's long-standing implant surface, produced by anodising the titanium to create a thickened, porous oxide layer. It has a very large clinical record behind it and has been in use since the early 2000s.

TiUltra is the newer development, described by Nobel as a graded surface whose properties change along the length of the implant, less porous near the top where the gum meets it, more porous further down where bone contact is wanted. Xeal is the related surface applied to the abutment above.

In plain terms

Every implant manufacturer roughens its surface, and every one of them has a trademarked name for doing it. The differences between modern surfaces are real but small, and they mostly affect the first few weeks of healing rather than whether the implant survives twenty years. A surface name on a brochure is not a reason to choose one system over another. Your bone quality, the surgeon's skill, your gum health and whether you smoke matter considerably more.

Practical considerations for patients in Canada

Cost. Nobel sits in the premium tier alongside Straumann, and is usually quoted well above value-tier systems.

Older implants. Because Nobel has been selling implants since the early 1980s, a large number of Canadians are walking around with Nobel implants placed decades ago. If you are one of them and need restorative work, the connection type is the first thing your dentist must establish. Nobel has generally maintained component availability for its older lines, which is a genuine advantage of a long-established manufacturer.

Availability. Widely distributed across Canada. As with any system, the surgeon's familiarity with the specific line matters more than the brand.

Is Nobel Biocare the same as Brånemark?

Brånemark System is one of Nobel Biocare's implant lines, named after Per-Ingvar Brånemark, whose research established osseointegration. The company commercialised his work from the early 1980s. Nobel Biocare today sells several systems, of which Brånemark System is the oldest.

Can any dentist replace a crown on a Nobel Biocare implant?

Any dentist can, provided they can identify which of the four connection types you have and can obtain matching components. This is why keeping a written record of your implant reference number matters.

Are Nobel Biocare implants metal-free?

Most are titanium. NobelPearl is the metal-free option, made from zirconia with a carbon-fibre-reinforced screw instead of a titanium one.
