Nobel Biocare N1
N1 is Nobel's most significant redesign in years, and unusually it is less about the implant than about the hole it goes into. The company rethought how bone is prepared, which, if the claims hold, matters more to healing than most implant features do.

Why the drilling matters more than you would think
Bone is living tissue and it is heat-sensitive. Conventional implant preparation drills a hole with a sequence of increasingly wide twist drills, and that generates friction and therefore heat. If bone is overheated it dies in a thin layer around the hole, and that dead bone must be cleared and replaced before healing can properly begin. Careful surgeons manage this with irrigation, light pressure and sharp drills, but the underlying process is inherently damaging.
N1 changes the method. Nobel states the system produces an osteotomy with low heat generation, that it preserves vital tissues, and that it is minimally invasive compared with conventional drilling.
How to weigh that claim
If bone preparation genuinely causes less thermal and mechanical damage, the plausible consequences are faster early healing and better preservation of the bone immediately around the implant. That is a coherent mechanism rather than a marketing abstraction, it targets a real and long-recognised problem in implant surgery.
N1 is a new system. The long-term clinical follow-up that exists for NobelActive or Brånemark System does not yet exist for it, and cannot for some years. A well-reasoned mechanism is a good sign, not proof of a better twenty-year outcome. If you are offered N1, you are receiving a thoughtfully engineered current-generation implant with a shorter track record than its stablemates, a reasonable trade for many people, but you should make it knowingly.
The trioval connection
N1 uses Nobel's trioval conical connection, a tapered socket with a three-lobed outline. It is the newest of Nobel's four connection families and the only one used by N1. Components from Nobel's conical, tri-channel or external hex lines will not fit it.
Nobel runs four incompatible connection families, external hex, tri-channel, conical and trioval conical. Components do not cross between them. Whatever you receive, get the connection type, platform and reference number written down; it determines which parts can ever be fitted to your implant. The brand page has a diagram of all four.
