Who Hiossen is

Hiossen is the North American arm of Osstem Implant, a South Korean manufacturer that is among the largest implant producers in the world by unit volume. Hiossen was established in the United States in 2006 and runs an active clinical education programme for dentists, which is a significant part of how the system spreads.

The SA surface, and what its numbers are measured against

Hiossen states plainly what SA means: sandblasted and acid etched. The company reports that compared with traditional RBM surface treatment, its SA surface shows a 45 % improvement in available surface area, a substantial quickening of the gene expression, cell differentiation and proliferation central to osseointegration, 20 % faster bone healing, and loading as early as six weeks after placement.

Note carefully what the comparison is

Every one of those figures is measured against RBM, resorbable blast media, an older surface technology. That is a fair and clearly stated comparison, and Hiossen deserves credit for naming its baseline, which many manufacturers do not. But it is not a comparison against a modern competitor's current surface. Sandblasted-and-acid-etched surfaces are the industry standard today; Straumann's SLA, for instance, is the same category of treatment. So "45 % more surface area than RBM" tells you SA is a modern surface. It does not tell you SA outperforms other modern surfaces, and it is not evidence of that.

The connection design

The ET III SA uses an 11° Morse taper connection. Hiossen states this is self-sealing, that the hermetic seal minimises micro-movement and reduces percolation of saliva and bacteria, and that a slightly smaller abutment diameter keeps the interface away from the bone.

Decoding "keeps the interface away from the bone"

This is platform switching, and it is worth understanding because nearly every manufacturer now does it. The junction between implant and abutment is a microscopic seam that bacteria can colonise, and bone tends to retreat from it. By making the abutment narrower than the implant top, that seam is moved inward, away from the surrounding bone. It is a small design change with a well-documented effect on preserving bone at the implant's neck, and it is one of the genuine advances of the last two decades rather than a marketing term.

Note the constraint in the last column. Mini fixtures at ∅ 3.5 mm have a 2.1 mm internal connection and accept only yellow colour-coded abutments; regular fixtures have a 2.5 mm connection and take green-coded parts. This is exactly the kind of detail that matters years later when a crown needs replacing, and exactly the kind that gets lost if nobody writes it down.

Cost. Mid to value tier, typically well below the European premium brands.

Canadian presence. Hiossen Implant Canada Inc. operates as Osstem's Canadian division from Toronto, with its own ordering platform and education programme. A manufacturer-owned Canadian entity is a better sign for long-term parts supply than distribution through a third-party reseller.

Scale. Osstem's manufacturing volume is genuinely enormous, it is consistently ranked among the largest implant manufacturers in the world by unit volume. That is reassuring for continuity of supply: a manufacturer producing at that scale is unlikely to discontinue a platform quickly.

Evidence base. Smaller and more recent than the European premium systems, and a greater proportion of it is manufacturer-associated. This is the main trade-off at this price point.
